Amid ongoing discussion and debate about the role of gas in supporting Australia's plans for reaching carbon-neutrality by 2050, the Australian Government announced its much-awaited Future Gas Strategy on 9 May 2024. The Strategy maps the Australian Government's plan for how gas will support our economy's transition to net zero in partnership with the world.

The strategy's stated objectives are to:

· support decarbonisation of the Australian economy

· safeguard energy security and affordability

· entrench Australia's reputation as an attractive trade and investment destination

· help our trade partners on their own paths to net zero.

Japan, as Australia's largest customer for LNG, will be a crucial partner in ensuring the success of the strategy – and conversely, the success of the strategy will also be integral to Japan's own energy security given that Australia regularly supplies between 30 and 40 per cent of its overall LNG needs. It will be vital that there is close consultation between the governments and businesses involved in the gas sector as implementation of the strategy takes place, and the transition to net zero unfolds.

This event, presented by the Clean Energy Transition Advisory Committee of the AJBCC, is designed to create an informal opportunity for such dialogue. The Australian government official responsible for the development of the strategy will provide an explanation of key aspects of the strategy as they apply to export trade and an update on implementation to date.

This will be followed by a discussion with Samantha McCulloch, CEO, Australian Energy Producers; and Bill Townsend, Senior Vice President Corporate, INPEX to hear their views on the strategy and what they think may be necessary to assist with its success.

The event will be held in a hybrid in-person/online format, under the Chatham House Rule.
