The seventh annual Japan Australia Investment ReportPartners in Prosperity — released earlier this year by Herbert Smith Freehills and The Australian National University (ANU), revealed that Japanese foreign direct investment in Australia reached a new record high in 2023, totalling A$133.8 billion and representing 12% of all FDI in Australia. Investments occurred across a large number of sectors including real estate, energy, technology, financial services, consumer goods, infrastructure, housing and services.

In this exciting time for the resilient Japan-Australia investment relationship, join us to hear from the report's co-author Ian Williams, Senior Advisor at Herbert Smith Freehills, together with one of the law firm's Japanese client practice leaders; and Elizabeth Cox, General Manager North East Asia at the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade).

HSF and Austrade will provide an overview of the report, an update on the Japan-Australia M&A transactions and partnerships that have emerged in the first half of 2024, and a breakdown of the trends that are shaping the trajectory of the Japan-Australia relationship in 2024.
