While Australia's strengths are seen as being in financial services, mining, energy and agriculture, it is not well known that the country punches above its weight in technology. From the creation of WiFi to the cochlear implant, Australia's businesses have developed deep technology that is shaping billions of lives around the world.

According to a Tech Council of Australia report, Australia is 1.6% of global GDP, yet it is the home of 2.3% of the world's tech unicorns ($1b plus valuation companies). This highlights the fact that technology innovation has emerged as a new and important industrial strength for Australia.

The success of Australia's tech sector has been underpinned by strong growth in venture capital, and other sources of global and local investment. The extent to which Australian tech segments are attracting venture capital funding is an indicator of where investors believe there will be future growth.
