Expressions of interest are now open for companies from Australia's sports ecosystem seeking to export to, form partnerships, and make in-market connections in Japan to participate in the Game Plan Japan: Sports Business Delegation.

Overview

Co-hosted by the AJBCC and the Australian Sports Technologies Network (ASTN), the visit is planned between Monday 21 April to Friday 25 April 2025, to Tokyo and Osaka.

Tokyo: Monday 21 April – Wednesday 23 April,

Osaka: Thursday 24 April – Friday 25 April


Program highlights include:

  • Doing business and investing in Japan briefing by Baker McKenzie
  • Sports diplomacy briefing by Australian Embassy Tokyo
  • Tokyo sports business networking event with the Australia New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Japan's (ANZCCJ) Sports for Business Committee
  • Sports Business Networking event in Osaka
  • Multiple Japan sport ecosystem stakeholder meetings with major corporations including Fujitsu, DAZN, Mizuno, Sports Xebio (others to be confirmed) and sports technology innovators, major event rights holders, sports travel and event providers.
  • Site visits showcasing Japan's approach to stadium design and technology, high performance, sport fashion and retail.
  • Japanese live sporting event experience (TBC)

Applicants should note that the various elements of the program are currently being coordinated and are subject to change. Updates will be shared with applicants as details are confirmed.


Participation fee

There will be a fee associated with participation in the above program however, the amount is yet to be confirmed. Delegates will also be expected to make their own travel arrangements and pay for the following expenses:

  • International flights to and from Japan and domestic transfers by bullet train required to participate in the visit.
  • Airport transfers
  • Accommodation
  • Meals (unless provided at events included as part of the itinerary)
  • Taxes, insurance, etc
  • Transport costs, such as bus transfers, taxis, Ubers and public transport
  • Any other costs incurred outside of activities included in the itinerary

Who should apply?

Applications are encouraged from export-ready Australian SportsTech startups and SMEs as well as sport governing bodies with a genuine interest in making in-market connections to explore opportunities for growth in Japan.

The program is tailored to the interests of organisations developing sports technology solutions and those engaged in sports business in general.


> Sports technology: Companies offering solutions in areas such as data analytics, ticketing, fan engagement platforms, esports, and wearable technology.

> Sports business: meetings and site visits may cover topics including sports diplomacy, stadium design, Japanese fan culture, sponsorship, major events, broadcasting and procurement.


Targeting up to a maximum of thirty (30) participants, applicants will be assessed on:

· Stage / export readiness

· Incorporation status

· The relevance of solutions and services offered

· Capacity to service export markets

A maximum of two (2) participants per organisation is permitted to attend the delegation.

Monday 3 February 2025 - Friday 14 February 2025: Application invitations sent

Monday 17 February 2025 – Friday 28 February 2025: Application screening and selection

Monday 3 March 2025 – Wednesday 5 March 2025: Announcement of outcome to applications
